The 2024 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) annual conference was a transformative three-day event aimed at supporting and connecting women in engineering and technology. The conference provided career guidance, academic and industry opportunities, and a platform for professional growth. Participants attended keynote speaker sessions, career fairs, networking events, and over 200 workshops and presentations. Regardless of their career paths, attendees found an abundance of personal and professional development resources tailored to their needs.

The Grainger College of Engineering made a strong impression at the conference with over 80 undergraduate and graduate students, 12 faculty and staff members, Women in Engineering (WIE) program staff, and numerous alumni in attendance. Grainger hosted a large recruitment booth featuring representatives from 10 different academic departments and programs. At the booth, faculty, staff, and the Director of WIE actively recruited for graduate programs and faculty positions. Graduate students showcased their state-of-the-art research, while members from Women in Nuclear (WiN) captivated attendees with an engaging demonstration. Alumni also played a significant role, presenting sessions and assisting with employer recruitment efforts.

Grainger students fully immersed themselves in the opportunities offered at the conference. They engaged in meaningful networking with peers and industry leaders, attended impactful keynote sessions, explored the career fair, and participated in a variety of workshops, panels, and presentations. By representing The Grainger College of Engineering, these students not only expanded their professional horizons but also acted as ambassadors for our institution. They gained valuable insights into topics like diversity and inclusion, volunteerism, personal branding, and overcoming imposter syndrome.

For many students, the SWE conference was an unforgettable experience. Aarthi Balaji, a senior in Computer Science and WIE program assistant, reflected, “If I could describe this conference in one word, it would be opportunity. It felt like everyone there wanted to give everyone else an opportunity, whether that be a professional opportunity or just an opportunity to express thoughts and feelings.” Shelby Fuller, a senior in Bioengineering and fellow WIE program assistant, added, “It was a very positive atmosphere where everyone was friendly and supportive. From waiting in line at the career fair to meeting people during breaks, everyone wanted to connect and encourage each other. It was a truly inspiring environment.”

Shelby also shared how the conference broadened her perspective: “The guidance and skills I gained made me feel very empowered about what I have been doing and what I can do with my degree. This conference helped me realize that I should not put boundaries on what I can achieve.” Delaney Marringa, a junior in Mechanical Engineering and WIE program assistant, highlighted the career fair as a standout experience: “I had so much fun meeting representatives from various companies. All of the recruiters were genuinely interested in getting to know us and were eager to share opportunities.”

Delaney encouraged future participation: “Without a doubt, I would definitely recommend other WIE students to attend future SWE Conferences!” Shelby emphasized the unique opportunities the event provides: “Being surrounded by so many intelligent and driven women in STEM was incredibly motivating. It’s an unparalleled chance to network, gain insights, and experience something beyond what a campus organization can offer.”

The 2024 SWE Conference was an extraordinary celebration of the strength and potential of women in STEM. Through showcasing the talent and achievements of Grainger’s faculty, students, and alumni, the event underscored the importance of community and support in advancing women’s careers in engineering and technology. From professional development to personal empowerment, this year’s conference with the theme of “Together We Rise” served as a catalyst for growth, providing tools and inspiration for attendees to excel in their educational and professional journeys.
