WIE Advisory Board
One way WIE stays connected with students on campus is through organizing an advisory board comprised of representatives from each of the different women in engineering RSOs throughout the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Grainger College of Engineering. The group provides support to one another’s events throughout the school year and plans co-sponsored events with WIE for the coming year.
If you are interested in connecting with more women engineering students, consider joining one of these student organizations:
Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a technical, professional, social, and outreach organization at the University of Illinois, and is part of a larger organization with over 14,000 members nationally. With an officer board of 17 and over 80 chair positions, there are many ways for you to get involved and build your resume!
Popular events include Girl Scout Workshops, a Night of Networking providing corporate workshops and career opportunities, a barn dance, semi-formal, and a yearly technical project competition. In addition to all of our events here on campus, becoming a national member of SWE allows you to attend national and regional conferences and pursue many scholarship opportunities. We are the largest engineering organization on campus, and provide a great support system for women in engineering.
Society of Women in Physics
The mission of the Society of Women in Physics (SWIP) is to provide a social and professional network among the female students in the physics department. SWIP also provides opportunities for its members to interact with physics students, faculty, and the community in social, academic and philanthropic events. They do this through hosting lunches with faculty and visiting speakers, attending conferences for women in physics across the Midwest, and participating in local outreach to further promote equality in the physical sciences.
Women in Aerospace
Women in Aerospace (WIA) is a Registered Student Organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign whose goal is to promote and maintain women’s interests in the field of aerospace engineering. WIA also aims to provide a supportive resource for current and prospective female aerospace engineers and foster a sense of community for women in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering.
Women in Computer Science
Women in Computer Science (WCS) is a non-profit, educational, student group under the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at The Grainger College of Engineering. The organization is dedicated to supporting the efforts of young women, who are pursuing a career in computer science or show an overall interest in technology. Because of the number of women pursuing Computer Science has been steadily decreasing, the organization aims to retain and provide a network of support for members to rely on for advice and camaraderie.
Women in Cybersecurity
Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) is a student chapter of a larger non-profit national organization dedicated to bringing together women in cybersecurity from academia, research and industry to share knowledge, experience, networking and mentoring. This RSO helps women interested in cyber security through tech talks, workshops, networking opportunities, research, conferences, and leadership opportunities. Our members are given the opportunity to attend the annual WiCyS National Conference and network with companies and fellow students passionate about the field of cyber security. WiCys aims to provide a supportive community to women in all stages of their pursuit of a cybersecurity career.
Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering
Women in ECE (WECE) is a student organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign dedicated to supporting women within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at The Grainger College of Engineering. We welcome members of all genders to be active in the group, and we strive to build communities amongst ourselves by hosting social, technical, outreach, and professional events.
Women in Chemical Sciences
Women in Chemical Sciences (WiCS) is an RSO dedicated to promoting a sense of community and an inclusive environment for women in Chemical Sciences. In doing so, they aim to educate women about the challenges encountered in male-dominated fields. With members in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Biochemistry, WiCS is certainly making strides in bringing women in STEM together.
Women in Mechanical Science and Engineering
Women in MechSE (WiM) was created for and by MechSE women to share experiences and learn about career opportunities. The individuals that created it believed that leadership among women in MechSE had decreased, so they wanted to form a group that would encourage it. Through career fairs, leadership events, company visits, lunches with women faculty, and weekly meetings, the group provides opportunities to explore career paths and encourages women to join other MechSE RSOs that have been predominately male in the past.
Women in Nuclear
Women in Nuclear (WiN) at UIUC aims to educate the local community about the benefits of nuclear technology and provide professional development our members.
